Nel 1898, Edward William Barton-Wright, di ritorno in Inghilterra da un soggiorno di tre anni nell’Impero del Giappone, annunciò la creazione di “una nuova arte di autodifesa”. Barton-Wright  utilizzò la sua conoscenza delle arti marziali asiatiche e occidentali per creare un sistema completo di autodifesa in contesti di strada che consentisse al praticante di assumere l’iniziativa e imporre la propria volontà sull’avversario senza adeguarsi al principio tipicamente occidentale di contrapporre la forza alla forza.
La parola era una combinazione del suo cognome e di “jujitsu”, e Barton-Wright affermava che ciò significava “autodifesa in tutte le sue forme“.

Il Bartitsu deriva le sue tecniche dalla boxe, dal judo e dal jujutsu. Contempla una varietà di forme di combattimento e di tecniche di uso del bastone.

Nel 1902, Barton-Wright scrisse:

« Nel bartitsu è compreso il pugilato, ovvero l’uso del pugno come mezzo contundente, l’uso dei piedi sia in senso offensivo che difensivo, e l’uso del bastone come mezzo di autodifesa. Judo e jujitsu, che erano stili segreti di lotta giapponese, si potrebbero definire azione ravvicinata applicata all’autodifesa.

Al fine di assicurare per quanto possibile l’immunità contro le ferite in attacchi codardi o zuffe, devono capire il pugilato per apprezzare completamente il pericolo e la rapidità di un colpo ben diretto, e le particolari parti del corpo che erano attaccate scientificamente. Lo stesso, naturalmente, valeva per l’uso del piede o del bastone.

Il judo ed il jujitsu non erano pensati come mezzi primari di attacco o di difesa contro un pugile o un uomo che vi prende a calci, ma dovevano essere usati solo dopo essere giunti a distanza ravvicinata, e per arrivare a distanza ravvicinata era assolutamente necessario capire il pugilato e l’uso del piede. »

Chi praticava il bartitsu considerava concluso il combattimento solo quando il rivale non era più in grado di usare le sue armi, né per difesa né per attacare.
Capito ora perché ci conviene sempre uscire con il nostro fidato ombrello? Non solo per la pioggia cari chaps!

1. Cucumber Sandwich Discus
   • Un panino al cetriolo è lanciato lungo il prato e deve atterrare nel quadrato prestabilito. Punti extra se il panino rimane commestibile.
2. Moving Hat Stand
   • I concorrenti devono gettare il loro cappello su un appendiabiti, che una squadra avversaria muove in modo casuale.
3. Rescue The Lady
   • Il gentleman deve raggiungere la sua milady attraversando il percorso prestabilito nel minor tempo possibile correndo con le gambe infilate in un sacco di liuta.
     
4. Umbrella Battle
• Due contendenti, armati solo con ombrelli e copie rinforzate di giornali, devono venirsi incontro “cavalcando” la bici tentando di disarcionarsi a vicenda.
  
5. Finger Joustling
• Nella “Battaglia dei pollici” i due giocatori stringendosi la mano destra tentano di sottomettere il pollice dell’avversario con il proprio.
6. Dressage
• Le signorine montano sui loro gentlemen mascherati da cavallo e devono manovrarli intorno ad una serie di ostacoli.
